STOCKHOLM DESIGN WEEK 2020

P H O T O S & O B S E R V A T I O N S

Stockholm Design Week takes place in a variety of venues across the city from galleries and showrooms to some other festive events such as dinner parties, after fair meetings, opening cocktails and so on. Together with Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair, Stockholm Design Week is maybe the most important week of the year for Scandinavian Design due to bringing buyers, architects, designers, press and influencers from all over the world together.

Below, you will find photos and thoughts from Fulden Dehneli, founder of f u l d e n d e,
on these selected 3 installations — “The Sculptor’s Residence”, “Adjectives” and “An exploration: Materials & Forms“. Enjoy!

As a trend-sensitive creative and design enthusiast, I am always closely following design events, including Stockholm Design Week, not only because I LOVE Scandinavian design but also it is my passion to observe, analyze and understand what’s happening around the world. Combining this passion with my photography and the desire spreading inspiration, this became one of my missions for f u l d e n d e — creating a Journal to share photos, thoughts and observations alongside my design work.

This year, this mission has became nearly impossible yet more meaningful as all the physical events have been cancelled or postponed world wide due to Covid-19. While non of us really know when our lives will go back to normal, all of us are trying to find some ways to support each other. By doing this sharing, my hope is to support some creatives who are in need of a moment of inspiration and normality.

Stay safe & stay inspired!

Being a part of the design week, The Sculptor’s Residence was an apartment space uniquely curated by Norm Architects. Through four different rooms that serve as an exhibition space, the objects in the performative space immerse guests in the mind of an artisan.

Meandering through each room, visitors gain a sense of stillness in time: surrounded by sound by Bang & Olufsen and artisan craft – material samples, tools, sketches – the sculptor’s residence contrasts creative energy with precise, ornamental details and artworks to allow the visitor to experience MENU’s and DUX’s timelessly modern designs in new ways.

As being one of my favorites within the venues I’ve visited during the Stockholm Design Week, The Sculptor’s Residence was an inspirational example of how to bring well-crafted designs and unique artworks together in a sensible and poetic way.

The installation is not only welcoming you to an artisan’s mind and workplace but also letting you to experience all these honest materials like wood, marble, ceramics, glass and such in many organic and geometric volumes.

This 3D-material-library like apartment turns into a space that you want to stay forever thanks to all these well-curated minimalistic furnitures, soothing lighting solutions that each room offers and finally the Bang & Olufsen sound systems.

Adjectives is a collaborative and experience driven installation creating a physical canvas to highlight the continuous interaction between spaces, objects, materiality, light and colour. Starting as a discussion between Note Design Studio and the Stockholm based auction house, Bukowskis, the installation aims to bring a different perspective to the items from Norm's achieve by using the well-known studio's design language to inject a new discourse into that used normally to describe art.

An adjective describes or modifies a noun or pronoun by indicating its quality, size, shape, duration, feelings, contents. This is the reasoning behind this installation - trying to transmit these feelings through space and objects. Note Design Studio partnered with Kvadrat, Vibia and Mutina - other companies that possess the capacity to generate the adjectives used when considering design, space and objects.

In addition the space welcoming you into a form, material and color experimented world, there are two other reasons why I was really impressed with this installation.

The first one is how it focuses on something so simple, yet so important - adjectives. When you think about it, it would be nearly impossible to talk without adjectives, yet we never really think or care about them. Within this installation, adjectives were visually there and defining the space while reminding their necessity.

My second reason is how design pieces come together and become art. I always question and try to define the fine line between an art piece and a design work. After all, with the right type of creation and curation, it seems fairly possible to transform one to another.

Frama is a Copenhagen-based, multi-disciplinary design brand that creates lifestyle objects that inspire the senses and encourage mindful living. With an emphasis on natural materials, simple geometries, and uncompromising quality, Frama’s work connects the imaginative with the practical, resulting in a uniquely warm and honest aesthetic.

For this installation, selected pieces from Frama was mixed with DRY STUDIO’s unique items and were exhibited during Stockholm Design Week on DRY STUDIO’s work studio and showroom located in Stockholm.

Frama’s naturalistic, organic and collaborative approach to design blending in DRY’s space and studio’s contemporary approach on creating timeless expressions turns into a theme of exploring materials and forms.

I just liked how effortless yet how unique this installation felt. As a fan of natural materials who always love to touch, smell, feel these materials whenever it is possible, it was a joy to see these materials coming together in right ways and proudly showing their beauty and strengths.  This soothing experience was like a reminder how we do not really need much.
